Why Your "Coping Skills" Aren’t Working: Moving from Quick Fixes to Sustainable Systems

We live in a fix-it culture. If you’re anxious, just stop thinking about it. If you’re overwhelmed, try a planner. If you’re a burnt-out caregiver, take a bubble bath. But for the high achiever, the neurodivergent adult, and the chronic caregiver, these fixes often feel like putting a Band-Aid on a broken dam. You don't need another tip or trick; you need a different system.
The Problem with the Fix-It Mentality
Most traditional therapy and self-help advice focuses on the Event level, the immediate crisis or symptom. This is what we call a Fix.
• A Fix is reactive: It happens after the explosion.
• A Fix is exhausting: It requires constant willpower to maintain.
• A Fix assumes you are the problem: It suggests you just aren't doing the work hard enough.
The Benefit of Systems Thinking
At KML Counseling & Wellness, I use a Systems-Based Approach. Instead of just looking at the symptom, we look at the underlying structures of your life. Think of it like an iceberg:

The Fix only touches what is above the water (the stress, the meltdown, the missed deadline). The System addresses what is beneath the surface (your environment, the systems you belong to, your processing style, your boundaries).
How Systems Change Your Life
1. For the Neurodivergent Individual:
If you are Autistic or have ADHD, a fix usually looks like trying to act "more neurotypical." This is called masking, and it leads to burnout.
• The System Change: We stop trying to fix your brain and start scaffolding your environment. We might create a digital external brain for executive functioning. We build a life that fits your brain, rather than forcing your brain to fit a neurotypical life.
2. For the High Achiever:
High achievers often use anxiety as an engine. The fix is usually just trying to lower the anxiety enough to keep working at an unsustainable pace.
• The System Change: We examine the Internal Operating System that says your worth equals your productivity. We build systems for Rest as Performance, where boundaries aren't just a suggestion, they are part of your professional infrastructure.
3. For the Caregiver:
Caregivers are often told to practice "self-care," which usually feels like half-hearted effort to address a chaotic lifestyle.
• The System Change: We look at your support network. We build communication systems to ask for help without the guilt-tax, and we create emotional systems that allow for the “and”: you can love who you care for and be deeply frustrated by the situation at the same time.
The Goal: Peace by Design, Not by Accident
When we build sustainable systems, your mental health stops being something you have to achieve every day through sheer grit and constant decision-making. It becomes the default setting of your life. You aren’t broken. You aren’t failing. You might just be trying to run a high-performance life on an outdated system.
