Common Questions

• What is Neurodiversity Affirming Counseling? Neurodiversity Affirming Counseling is a therapeutic approach that rejects the idea that neurodivergence (like Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, or other learning differences) is an illness or a flaw that needs to be "cured" or corrected. Instead, we view neurodivergent traits as natural variations in the human brain. Therapy focuses on:

  • Non-Pathologizing: We don't see your traits as deficits, but rather as differences in how your brain processes and interacts with the world.

  • Self-Acceptance: We help you dismantle the lifelong pressure of masking (hiding your natural traits) and move toward authentic self-acceptance.

  • Building Systems: The goal is to develop personalized systems and strategies that work with your unique cognitive profile, not against it, allowing you to thrive in a world often built for neurotypical people.

• Do I need a formal diagnosis (like Autism or ADHD) to begin therapy? No, you do not need a formal diagnosis to start counseling. Many adults seek support after recognizing their traits later in life, and the process of self-discovery or seeking a formal assessment can take time. I welcome clients who are:

  • Self-Identifying: You strongly relate to the traits of Autism, ADHD, or AuDHD.

  • Seeking Clarity: You are in the process of seeking a formal diagnosis or exploring if it would be helpful.

  • Already Diagnosed: You have a formal diagnosis and are seeking affirming support.

My focus is always on your lived experience and how your unique brain functions, regardless of the official label.

Will I learn coping skills that actually work for my brain? Yes, absolutely. Many neurodivergent adults feel frustrated by generic coping skills (like traditional time management or simple deep breathing) that seem effective for others but fall flat for them. In this affirming approach, we work collaboratively to build skills that are intuitive and compatible with your specific profile, such as:

  • Leveraging Strengths: Utilizing traits like hyperfocus or strong pattern recognition to create systems that are motivating.

  • Addressing the Root Cause: Developing strategies for managing sensory overstimulation or executive function challenges instead of just treating the resulting anxiety.

  • Flexible Frameworks: Creating adaptable routines for task initiation and organization that account for task paralysis and the realities of a neurodivergent schedule.
